TGSS is looking for nomads’ taxes
Recently, General Treasury of the Social Security – Tesorería General de La Seguridad Social (TGSS) has begun requesting from the UGE the details of a nomad’s residence registration, in order to determine whether a person truly has the right to work as an autónomo (self-employed).
This may be related to the fact that nomads, whose work situation has changed (for example, they have transitioned from employment to freelance), are attempting to immediately register with the Spanish social security system and open a business as self-employed. However, this cannot be done without prior agreement with the UGE.
This is because the nomad card pertains to the so-called Permiso único: residence + work, and it is unclear from the information on the TIE card whether permission is granted for opening an Autónomo, or if one can only work as an employee for a foreign company.
Because of this, the time for confirming your registration with social security may increase from 2 working days to a week.
